选自《简爱》的第二十三章
Do you think because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!–I have as much soul as you,–and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty, and much wealth ,I should have made it as hard for you to leave me , as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh; –it is my spirit that address your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal,–as we are!
译文:你以为，因为我穷，低微、不美、矮小，我就没有灵魂没有心么？你想错了！我的灵魂跟你的一样，我的心也跟你的完全一样！要是上帝赐于我财富和美貌，我一定要让你难以离开我，就像我现在难以离开你。我现在与你说话，是我的精神与你的精神说话，就像两个都经历了坟墓，我们站在上帝脚跟前，是平等的，因为我们是平等的!
推荐理由:这是书中我觉得简爱说得最让人有感触的一句话，人的真正的纯正感情不建立于任何外貌，财富，地位之上，它是两个灵魂互相亲近依靠的过程。而自我感情是平等的，每个人都拥有它，不管漂亮与否，贫穷与否。希望阳光下，鲜花里有更多的简爱走出来，都能拥有美好的心灵和充实的心胸，都能以独立的人格和坚强的个性生活。
