Located 15 kilometers southwest of Tian'anmen Square and spanning the Yongding River, the Lugou Bridge is the oldest existing multi-arch stone bridge in Beijing. First built in 1192 and rebuilt in 1698, it is supported by 281 pillars. Each pillar is adorned with a stone lion, and more small stone lions are hidden on the head, back, abdomen or claws of each main lion. These lifelike stone lions in various postures are fine works of stone carving art on the bridge. There are so many stone lions that a local saying in Beijing goes, "The lions on the Lugou Bridge are too many to count." The bridge is not only world-famous for its aesthetic features but also recognized as a landmark in the history of stone bridge architecture.
